10 Sustainable and Fun Green Week Ideas for 2024

For a

For lot of organisations, the start of the year marks the beginning of preparation for Green Days, Weeks, and in some cases Months. While some may have a tried-and-tested formula of activities that engage employees, boost awareness and target behaviour change, others may be searching for inspiration.

Over the last 10 weeks on LinkedIn, we've been excited to share a variety of ideas on designing activities that promote a greener culture within organizations. We've delved into creative strategies that can help Green Teams promote collaboration, engagement and stewardship - check them out below!

  1. Green Innovation Challenge

Collaborate with educational institutions on a Green Innovation Challenge. Invite students to propose innovative solutions to local environmental challenges, while your employees become mentors that guide and support the teams along the way. Host a final event where the teams present their ideas, and consider implementing the winning solution with the community.

2. Sustainable Commute Showcase

Suggested hashtags:#idea #workers #transport #emissions

Build awareness around the environmental impact of different transportation choices for commuting to work. Encourage employees to commit to a #CleanCommute and recognise participants with personalised shout-outs and incentives. This can also be an opportunity to track emissions generated by employees’ commute.

3. Bee Appreciation

Suggested hashtags:#idea #awareness #nature #biodiversity

Organise a visit to a local bee sanctuary to understand the critical role bees play in our ecosystem. Bees are key actors for pollination and biodiversity, and in many places are at risk of extinction. Aside from boosting awareness, your organisation could also learn about opportunities to get more actively involved in local conservation efforts.

4. "Waste Warriors” Challenge

Invite employees to showcase their commitment to sustainability by reducing waste in their daily routines. Set the scope of the activity (is it just at work, or at home too?) and tackle the challenge individually or in teams. Track and measure the progress through a scoreboard, and share tips and tricks to help your colleagues scale best-practices.

5. Co-creation with communities

Suggested hashtags: #communities #socialimpact #culture

Collaborate with local artists and communities to organise an upcycling art initiative. Collect discarded materials or items that can be repurposed, and host workshops where participants can create art installations or functional items. The finished art pieces could be exhibited in public spaces, turning the project into a visible symbol of community collaboration and environmental consciousness.

6. Knowledge Exchange with Communities

Partner with local schools, community groups, or libraries to offer workshops that facilitate knowledge-exchange. For example, if your organisation excels on a topic like Artificial Intelligence, you could design a short workshop on “The basics of AI”. This could help empower community members with valuable knowledge and create a platform for ongoing collaboration.

7. Collaborative CleanUps

Partner with local environmental organisations to organise cleanups or restoration events, perhaps in parks or rivers. Engage employees and community members in hands-on activities that contribute to the preservation of natural spaces. Consider making these events regular occurrences, creating a sense of ongoing collaboration and commitment to environmental stewardship.

8. Green Champions

Invite individuals who are passionate about environmental initiatives to spearhead behaviour change initiatives. These green leaders drive awareness, champion eco-friendly practices, and inspire colleagues to make a positive impact. By cultivating a culture of sustainability from within, we create lasting change that ripples through both our workplace and the wider community.

9. Encourage Circular Fashion

Why not exchange pre-loved clothes at a company swap shop? The activity not only promotes a circular fashion economy but also cultivates a sense of community among employees. By reimagining how we view and repurpose clothing, we can reduce waste and foster a culture of conscious consumption. If there are any unhoused items at the end of the day, bag them and donate them to local clothes banks.

10. Host a Green Town Hall

While sustainability strategies are often led by senior leaders, getting input from stakeholders is a best-practice that should be fostered on a continuous basis. Green Week is a key opportunity to share your organisation’s climate action plans and progress with employees. Thoughtful design of your Town Hall is essential and make sure to create space for questions, feedback and ideas!
