How can we address these challenges and create innovative solutions for mitigating displacement? How can we design and build spaces that are responsive, adaptive, and inclusive for displaced people and their host communities?
According to the UNHCR, there were 82.4 million forcibly displaced people worldwide at the end of 2020, the highest number on record. Displacement can be caused by various factors, such as conflict, violence, persecution, human rights violations, natural disasters, and climate change.
Displacement not only affects the lives and livelihoods of the displaced people but also the spaces they inhabit and leave behind. The built environment plays a crucial role in providing shelter, security, dignity, and resilience for displaced people. However, it also faces many challenges, such as a lack of resources, infrastructure, planning, coordination, and sustainability.
At Colectivo, we are concerned about geopolitical and climate change displacement, and our expert Letizia Caprile OrtÃz has her eye, particularly on the built environment and spaces impacted. Letizia helps organisations design and create spaces that are more sustainable, equitable and adaptable in the face of uncertainty.Â
