Why We’re Launching the Innovation Spotlight series 

We are living through a strange paradox.

On one hand, the world feels increasingly stuck: geopolitical fragmentation, regulatory pressure, climate limits, supply chain shocks, and economic uncertainty all piling on top of each other. On the other, we are witnessing waves of innovation, in materials, energy, biology, AI, and circular systems.

At Colectivo, we believe the next decade will not be decided by who talks the most about transformation, but by who learns fastest from working solutions already in motion. That’s why we’re launching the Innovation Spotlight Series. Each edition focuses on concrete innovations that respond to systemic risk, translating them into strategic signals for leaders.

Best known for convening leaders across business, government, academia, and civil society, the World Economic Forum operates at the intersection of public-private cooperation, economic foresight, and innovation. Its mission is simple: to improve the state of the world by turning dialogue into coordinated action across industries and regions. 

In this first Spotlight, drawing on WEF insights, we focus on two innovations that show how organisations are already adapting in practice:

Key Takeaways from the WEF: Economic Outlook for 2026, Weak growth and a disrupted new economic reality 

What do chief economists expect in the years ahead? Not a crisis but prolonged instability. Insights from the WEF suggest global growth will remain weak, shaped by trade disputes, geopolitical fragmentation, and rapid technological disruption (1:01). Rather than a return to pre-crisis norms, businesses face a more complex and unpredictable economic environment.

Gen Z & AI: Skills Are Being Rewritten

As the first true digital natives, Gen Z is already integrating AI into everyday work. Three in four Gen Z workers use AI to learn new skills, explore career paths, and solve problems faster. At the same time, nearly half report anxiety about AI’s impact on their careers, a concern amplified by shrinking entry-level opportunities. Forward-looking companies are responding by:

  • Integrating AI directly into how people learn and reskill at work

  • Making skill progression clear and achievable

  • Designing automation around human needs, not replacing them

A clear example comes from Haier in China. Through the World Economic Forum’s Frontline Talent of the Future initiative, Haier redesigned frontline manufacturing roles using AI, not to replace workers, but to reorganise tasks, schedules, and skill requirements. AI-enabled job redesign allowed new mothers to remain in manufacturing roles by reducing physical strain, increasing flexibility, and matching tasks to individual capacity. The result was not only improved inclusion, but higher productivity, lower turnover, and greater workforce stability.

Climate Risk, Informal Work & Systemic Solutions

In Delhi, extreme heat and pollution regularly force informal workers to stop working, eliminating income overnight. Without contracts or sick pay, climate stress becomes economic stress. A new climate-triggered insurance pilot offers an alternative model, providing automatic payouts when conditions become unsafe. Early results show improved financial stability and resilience for workers and their families. This is systemic innovation in action, where climate policy, technology, and labour protection intersect.
