Stories of Inspiration: How Collaboration Shaped Project Digital and Credit Union Banking

At Colectivo, we start from a simple belief: no single vision, however brilliant, can outperform the collective intelligence of the people who will actually use what you build. It's why we exist, and it's the thread that runs through our latest conversation with Austin, Product Manager at Progress Systems, the team behind the web and mobile banking platforms used by credit unions across Ireland and the UK.

The subject this time is Project Digital: a ground-up reimagining of the mobile banking app that millions of credit union members rely on every day. And while it would be easy to call it "just" a tech upgrade, this conversation makes the case for something bigger: a redesign built not from the top down, but through genuine collaboration between Progress, Colectivo, the credit unions themselves, and the members whose lives the app is meant to serve.

Why collaboration isn't a buzzword here

Austin puts it simply: no one person has all the answers. When you're rebuilding something as foundational as a mobile banking experience, the only way to get it right is to bring together as many perspectives as possible, reducing risk, yes, but more importantly, surfacing the insight that no single team could reach alone. It's a philosophy that sits at the heart of Colectivo's own name, the Spanish word for "collective", and one we saw play out in practice throughout this project, from stakeholder mapping to user interviews to accessibility audits.

Designing for everyone, not just the "typical" user

One of the most compelling parts of the conversation is how Project Digital approached inclusive design. Rather than assuming one "correct" way to navigate a banking app, the team leaned into the reality that different users think and interact differently, some are used to tapping and swiping, others to dragging and clicking, shaped by the technology they grew up with.

The result? Multiple ways to complete the same task. Want to transfer funds? You can tap through your accounts, swipe between them, or navigate to your balances directly, all three paths lead to the same outcome. It's a small design choice with a big implication: accessibility isn't an afterthought, it's built into the architecture of the app itself.

Accessibility as sustainability

This is where the conversation connects to something we care deeply about at Colectivo: sustainability isn't just environmental, it's social and structural too. Credit unions are community-rooted, member-owned cooperatives, and their long-term relevance depends on staying genuinely accessible to everyone they serve, regardless of age, tech familiarity, or ability. By moving away from compartmentalised navigation and toward a more contextual, human-centred flow, Project Digital helps ensure that digital banking doesn't leave anyone behind, a quietly powerful contribution to the resilience of credit unions across Ireland for years to come.
