Explain'd: What is Carbon Footprinting
At Colectivo, we believe sustainability must be measurable to be effective. Explain’d is our series focused on clarifying the concepts that influence business operations in a carbon-constrained world.
Today, we examine one of the most widely used and often misunderstood tools in sustainability: the Carbon Footprint Assessment.
A Carbon Footprint Assessment measures a business's total greenhouse gas emissions. It accounts for all activities required for operations, including energy use, supply chains, and product use. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol typically guides this process, categorising emissions as direct, indirect energy, and value chain emissions.
While it may seem technical, the assessment provides deeper insights.
Once a business maps its emissions, it gains a new perspective. Previously efficient activities may reveal hidden costs, supply chains may show vulnerabilities, and growth strategies may expose reliance on carbon-intensive systems.
Measurement matters not just for producing data, but for reframing decision-making.
A Carbon Footprint Assessment is not solely for compliance reporting. Its purpose is to make impact visible, enabling more informed design and decision-making.
The real shift happens when businesses stop asking, “What are our emissions?” and start asking, “Why are they happening in the first place?” and “what can we do to take action?”
This is where transformation begins.
